For healthcare service providers (statutory health insurance)

Service providers wishing to become contractual partners of a health insurance fund have to be qualified to exercise their profession in a proper and expert manner and fulfill certain specified demands on their technical and personal suitability and effectiveness. According to Section 126, Paragraph 1 of the German Social Security Code Book V (SGB V), medical aids may be dispensed to insured members only after conclusion of contracts between health insurance funds and service providers according to Section 127 Paragraph 1,2, and 3 of the German Social Security Code Book V.

The prequalification procedure can provide valid proof of the suitability of a service provider for all health insurance funds.

According to Section 126, Paragraph 1a of the German Social Security Code Book V (SGB V), the health insurance funds have to make sure that the demands placed on service providers, as laid down in the recommendations of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds (GKV-Spitzenverband), are satisfied. The prequalification procedure was established to obviate the need for countless individual supplier suitability checks by each individual health insurance fund. Such confirmations of suitability are to be recognised by all health insurance funds.
